The Legatum Institute is delighted to welcome Matthew Elliott to its Senior Team. Matthew will be a Senior Fellow, and is focusing on two strands of work: The progress and possibilities of a UK-US trade deal and exploring and researching the rise of Populism abroad, with special focus on the US and those countries facing significant elections this year and next (France, Netherlands and Germany.) The work he will do, with the background he brings could not be more timely or relevant.
Matthew is strengthening a growing team of thought leadership at the Legatum Institute. He brings to it a reputation of being, as one Newspaper put it, “one of the most formidable political strategists in Westminster”. Matthew has earned such recognition by leading successful official campaigns in two of the three modern Referendums held in this country.
As the Chief Executive of VoteLeave, the official Brexit campaign in the 2016 EU referendum, Matthew has sealed his position as one of the UK's foremost political campaigners, a success built on the solid foundation of leading the NOtoAV campaign in the 2011 referendum on the Alternative Vote.
He has founded and run groups as diverse as the TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA) and Business for Britain (BfB) where he published ‘Change, or Go: How Britain would gain influence and prosper outside an unreformed EU’, which was serialised in the Daily Telegraph and is now a key blueprint for Britain's exit from the European Union.
Baroness Stroud CEO of the Legatum Institute says
“We are building a team at Legatum whose work will ensure that we are equipped to tackle the major challenges and take hold of the major opportunities of our generation. Matthew’s proven campaigning skills, strength of thought leadership and ability to deliver transformational results make him key to that vision. We could not be more delighted that he has chosen to come and join the Legatum team.”
Matthew Elliott says
"I'm delighted to be joining the Legatum Institute as a Senior Fellow because Philippa and her team are uniquely placed to provide clear thinking for not only the UK Government, but also for policy makers right across the world. Brexit provides us with an opportunity to promote global prosperity by strengthening free trade, and the Institute is one of the only think-tanks with the skills and global reach to achieve this important objective. Clarity of thought is also required on the rise of Populism, and I look forward to analysing the similarities and differences between public opinion in Britain and overseas."
