Lord O’Shaughnessy, who previously worked for the Prime Minister, David Cameron, as his Director of Policy between 2010 and 2011, will spend up to one day a week at the think tank. He will be responsible for advising and coordinating the research programmes across the Legatum Institute.
Lord O’Shaughnessy has a wealth of experience in public policy. As well as advising the Prime Minister during the last parliament, he also worked for three years (2007-2010) in the Conservative Party as Director of Policy and Research. During that time he was responsible for writing and producing the party’s 2010 General Election Manifesto.
Prior to that, he was Deputy Director of the think tank Policy Exchange where he was responsible for the operation and delivery of their award winning research programme. He authored and edited several publications, including proposals on Academies and Free Schools that are now government policy.
A passionate advocate of the potential of character in education to transform children’s lives, in 2013 Lord O’Shaughnessy set up Floreat Education, a growing chain of Academies and Free Schools in the primary sector.
His service to education and public policy was recognised by the Prime Minister in 2015 when O’Shaughnessy was appointed to the House of Lords.
Sian Hansen, Executive Director of the Legatum Institute said:
"James is one of the leading policy experts in this country. He has personally seen his work taken up by the government and has advised the Prime Minister on a range of policy issues. He has also put his words into action, setting up schools that not only develop childrens' academic potential but also their character strengths and virtues. We are thrilled that he will be joining the Legatum Institute as we look ahead to an exciting 2016."
