“I think the fear now is that the scale of the refugees is so much larger than anything Europe has ever seen before. The possible genuine refugees coming from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya is now so large that Hungarians I think are genuinely worried about their ability to control it. It's also true that the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has very much wanted to use this crisis as a way of building up his own support. His biggest political challenge in Hungary is from the far right. He is traditionally described as a centre right politician. He is now fighting against an explicitly racist and an explicitly radical far right movement which has about 20% of the popular vote, and so he has used this crisis from the beginning really to increase his own credibility among that electorate”
