World-class Centre for Metrics

WORLD CLASS CENTRE FOR METRICS

The Legatum Institute understands the importance of accurate data when making decisions that affect people’s lives. We are building a world class Centre for Metrics that will ensure:

  • Our understanding of the challenges this generation faces are informed, accurately diagnosed and analytically robust and
  • The solutions we propose are rooted in accurate data, and drive the most effective interventions

The Centre is focused on promoting policies that lift people from poverty to prosperity. Our Centre for metrics drives this through:

The Social Metrics Commission The Social Metrics Commission is an independent charity chaired by the Legatum Institute's CEO Baroness Stroud. It is dedicated to helping policy makers and the public understand and take action to tackle poverty. Its ultimate goal is to develop new poverty metrics for the UK which will have both long-term political support and effectively identify those who are in poverty. By doing so, we hope that Government and others will be better able to develop interventions that reduce the number of people experiencing poverty and improve outcomes for those people who do experience it.

The Prosperity Index For a decade The Legatum Prosperity Index™ has been offering a unique insight into how prosperity is forming and changing across the world. Based on an updated methodology developed over the last 2 years with input from world leading advisers including Nobel Laureate Angus Deaton it measures Prosperity across 149 countries looking at a variety of categories: Economic, Business Environment, Health, Education, Governance, Personal Freedom, Safety and Security, Social Capital and Natural Environment.

The UK Prosperity Index  Applying the model and methodology of the Global Prosperity Index this is a view of 389 UK local authority areas providing a unique insight into how Prosperity is distributed across Britain. On a national scale the Index is made up of seven categories looking at Economic Quality, Business Environment, Education, Health, Safety and Security, Social Capital and Natural Environment. This Index is the most comprehensive and detailed compilation of nationally accepted data available.

The Africa Prosperity Report Again using the model of the Global Prosperity Index, the Africa report is an attempt to draw together detailed analysis of the data for this dynamic and emerging continent. It also aims to improve data collection in countries that have traditionally been weak in the collation and provision of detailed metrics.
