As part of the Legatum Institute's Salon Series, Professor Robert Evans of the University of Oxford discusses Mitteleuropa and how, in many ways, it remains highly relevant to the early 21st century debate about the future of the world.
Professor Evans is a world leading authority on Mitteleuropa – the territory of central Europe that extends from Germany across to the borders of Russia and the Balkans.
His books discuss the question of whether the cultural, political, economic and social development of this area makes the entire region unique in the history of the world.
Answers to this question have emerged from a tradition of thought focussed on Europe but nowadays commentators and historians tend to be more interested in the non-European world.

In its Salon Series the Legatum Institute hosts scholars, writers, artists and public figures to discuss issues that are fundamental to the success of free, prosperous, and enterprising societies. Ranging widely across the arts, sciences and humanities, the conversations promote a discourse between cultural, philosophical, economic and political modes of enquiry.
Attendance at Legatum Institute events is by invitation only and RSVP is required. If you are interested in attending an event or would like to be added to our mailing list, please contact info@li.com.
