"Today, modern slavery is on the political agenda in a way it wasn’t 11 years ago. The Home Office has endorsed the introduction of a Modern Slavery Bill; and although precise numbers are still difficult to agree on, the Walk Free Foundation’s Global Slavery Index of 2013 estimates that there are 29.8 million people currently in slavery across the globe.
The problem is not confined to the metropolitan elite. Beyond the neatly clipped hedges of suburbia, vulnerable women are eking out a desperate living without documents, decent pay or any understanding of their rights."
