His visit coincided with the publication of a series of books by David Brooks, Steve Hilton, Charles Murray and Robert Putnam that all identify the weakening of social bonds within poorer communities as a leading cause of economic inequality. Lord Sacks took part in an off-the-record seminar, moderated by Tim Montgomerie, Senior Fellow at the Legatum Institute, to discuss these themes and also to acknowledge the role of capitalism in tackling global poverty. He also set out the key arguments in his new book, Not In God’s Name.
